Overview

Fraud News Network reports on one subject: money taken through deception. Its readers follow Ponzi schemes, securities cases, syndication collapses and regulator actions. We delivered the iOS and Android app that turns the newsroom's investigations and court-record analysis into a live, filterable feed.

02

The challenge

Anyone tracking investment fraud had to stitch the story together from SEC releases, court dockets, enforcement notices and general news sites, usually days after the fact. There was no publication organized around how these schemes work or who loses money to them. FNN needed a reader app that could organize very different kinds of fraud and alert readers the moment something significant happened.

03

Our approach

We kept the app to one Flutter codebase so iPhone and Android readers get every alert and feature on the same day, backed by a Node.js and TypeScript API on MongoDB that stores the reporting and drives alerts.

04

How we built it

3 steps, from architecture to launch.

  1. 01

    A beat-based structure

Stories are filed under beats such as SEC actions, real estate deals and broader financial crime, so each reader can narrow the feed.

  2. 02

A push pipeline for big stories

The API pushes alerts for major cases and enforcement actions without waiting for a digest.

  3. 03

    Reader tools

Saved searches, a trending list and bookmarks let people follow a case for weeks.

Technical challenges

Problem → How we solved it
01

Beats instead of one firehose

Problem

A Reg D offering, a banking scandal and a consumer scam have little in common, and one feed buried all of them.

How we solved it

Stories are tagged into beats, and readers follow only the ones relevant to their work.

02

Alerts that beat the weekly roundup

Problem

Court and regulator filings surface slowly, and readers were learning about cases late.

How we solved it

A dedicated push pipeline notifies readers when a major development is published.

03

Reporting, not advising

Problem

Coverage of live cases could easily read like legal or investment guidance.

How we solved it

We designed article layouts to present sourced facts and public records, keeping commentary clearly separate from counsel.
